“One can no more hope to find consciousness by digging into the brain than one can find gravity by digging into the earth.” – Karl Pribram (board certified neurosurgeon, Professor emeritus at Stanford and Radford in psychology and psychiatry)

The famous consciousness scientist Stanislav Grof says that the brain is simply a reducing valve or an interface to your mind which is outside of your brain. Grof states that the brain does not produce consciousness, only alters it. For instance: If your computer is malfunctioning your access to the information on the internet might be cut off, but the information is still on the internet, it’s just not accessible. The same might be true of your brain function. If someone has brain damage their ability to retrieve information from their mind is usually impaired, like a computer that is malfunctioning. But, just like the internet does not originate on your computer, your mind does not originate in the brain. The brain is simply an interface.

What scientific evidence is there that the mind exist outside of the brain?

A man by the name of John Lorber did studies on people with something called hydrocephalus; a condition where cerebrospinal fluid is trapped and puts pressure on the brain in the skull. It is also known as water on the brain. This pressure pushes brain tissue up against the skull and essentially reduces the size of the brain. One young man he did a CAT scan on only had a very thin 1mm thick brain tissue around the perimeter of his skull and the rest of his cranium was filled with fluid. Normally this would cause severe mental incapacity or even death, but apparently this person’s condition came on slowly enough for the brain to accommodate the deformity. In fact this person with only 1mm thick brain tissue had an I.Q. of 126 and was an honors graduate of mathematics.

Another case published in the British medical journal The Lancet, shows a scan of a perfectly functional man with most of his brain missing. You can see in the picture the comparison of a normal brain on the right compared to the brain scan on the left which shows mostly missing brain tissue.

So it is possible to have normal, even above average thinking ability with almost no brain tissue at all. This indicates that a major portion of thought might be happening outside of the brain and the brain is simply an interface for thought. Just like I don’t need a real expensive computer to access the internet. Sometimes a cheap computer works just as well, as long as I have a good connection.

How is it possible that someone with hardly any brain tissue can function normally? There are several theories that might help explain this. Some of these are: The Conscious Electro Magnetic Intelligence filed theory or CEMI field theory – This theory states that the electromagnetic field generated by neurons firing in the brain creates a pattern that can hold information.

Quantum Mind theories – These theories try to make a connection between the known chemical actions in brain neurons and possible connections to microtubules within the structure of a neuron. These microtubules are made of molecules that are made of atoms that contain electrons, which in turn could be entangled in a communication of some kind. In other words, quantum states of atomic and subatomic particles might play a part in neuronal processing of information in the brain.

Whether any of these theories are correct or not, one thing is for sure, some people with hardly any brain tissue at all can function in a perfectly normal way. This indicates that thought originates outside of the brain and that the brain is simply an interface or antenna for thought.

What other evidence is there for thought outside the brain?

  • Numerous well documented near-death reports and out-of-body experiences.
  • Past life memories.
  • Validated psychic mediums talking to “dead” people.
