(The Conscious Resistance)

On November 16th activists from around the United States will once again march. This march, however, will not focus on the White House, the War in Syria, the Veterans, Monsanto, Chelsea Manning, or NSA spying. This time organizers are looking to focus their attention on the Fourth Estate, the media, specifically what is referred to as the “Mainstream Media”.

The calls for action have come as a response to the lack of American Mainstream Media coverage of larger national and global protests such as the March Against Monsanto, Stop Spying, and other events such as Adam Kokesh’s Veterans for Ron Paul March, which saw over 1,000 veterans march on the White House back in 2012. These events were largely ignored by the big media names unless convenient for their narrative.

Of course it is not just by omittance that the MSM controls the conversation. The media is also well known for outright lies and distortions in order to achieve whatever goals have been handed down to them by their overlords.

During the build up to the Iraq War in the 1990’s the media paraded around the story of babies being killed by Iraqi soldiers removing them from incubators after the invasion of Kuwait. The story came from the testimony a woman by the name of Nayirah gave to the Congressional Human Rights Caucus. Amnesty International picked up on the story and it was soon seen as one of the reasons we should attack Iraq. Shortly after it was revealed that Nayirah was the daughter of Saud bin Nasir Al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti ambassador to the United States and that her testimony had been organized by a public relations campaign connected to the Kuwaiti government.

Taking a false story and running with it is one thing, but what about the media centers themselves selling lies? Former CNN anchor Amber Lyon says “The Most Trusted Name in News” is guilty of doing just that. During the Arab Spring Lyon and a CNN crew went into Bahrain to film a documentary on the use of social media by revolutionary activists. Lyon claims her crew was detained and interrogated for several hours. She also claims that the governments of Georgia, Bahrain and Kazakhstan pay CNN for favorable news coverage. In September 2012, Lyon stepped forward as an internal whistleblower on the practices of CNN.

Is Marching Enough?

Recognizing the lies, distortions and misinformation that spews from the mouths of the controlled media is the first step towards freeing oneself from its grasp. Today in America 6 Corporations own nearly everything you see, hear, and read through the radio, television and print. Of course with the free flow of information allowed by the internet this has begun to change.

In the past 10 years the world has seen an explosion of independent reporters, bloggers, video journalists, and radio show hosts. Everyday folk have decided to take the reins back and provide their friends and family with something beyond the usual horse manure served to the American people as journalism. With open source software and readily available equipment nearly anyone with a voice, an opinion and a little bit of cash can begin broadcasting to an audience.

This is an important part of the March Against Mainstream Media strategy. On Saturday November 16th organizers are asking activists to use the helpful map on www.mamsm.info to find a local mainstream affiliate to march on. Activists will hold signs, and rally outside the buildings in the hopes that the news will cover the events. It is, of course, likely that even when the citizens are on their doorsteps the media will choose to ignore the marches. And that is where the second part of the plan comes in.

#MAMSM is asking for all interested independent, new media outlets to write articles, do video reports and interviews on the action. By doing so MAMSM will partner with new media and turn millions on to new sources of information. Either the old media will cover the actions on the doorsteps and give us the coverage we demand, OR they will ignore it and alternative media will be there to pick up the pieces and report on their failures.

We need your help to make this work. Every one of you reading this has an incentive to help spread new media outlets. It does not matter if you are on the left, the right, post political or apolitical, we should all be able to agree that the media in this country is garbage. Whether your issue is Manning, GeoEngineering, War in the Middle East, or Million Mask Marches, we should work to put aside our differences and accept that the media is serving no one but its corporate and state masters.

WE HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THAT.

One last point I would like to make is in regards to the very name “Mainstream Media”. This moniker is commonly used to describe the big 6 corporations and their affiliates. While they are presently still the “mainstream”, I hardly believe they truly represent what the average person thinks. By choosing to continue calling them “mainstream” and referring to ourselves as “Alternative” we are creating the impression (and thus the reality) that we are secondary to their first rate news coverage.

Our thoughts influence our words, which influence our actions and our behaviors. Whether we realize it or not we are programming ourselves. So let’s march, but I propose beginning November 16th, 2013 we never refer to the big 6 as the “Mainstream Media” and us as “Alternative”. On November 16th let’s march on the corporate controlled, old media and proclaim the NEW, Independent Media to be the new norm Let us create a new paradigm in journalism that allows for expression of all opinions and ideas and truthful reporting.
